Internal Auditing Skills: Conducting Audits That Actually Find Something

Internal audits in many organizations follow a familiar pattern: the auditor arrives with a checklist, asks whether certain documents exist, confirms they do, and writes a report saying everything is satisfactory. Six months later the same audit happens again. Nothing changes because nothing was found.

This course is for people who suspect their audits could be more useful and want to know how. It covers process-based auditing, which means following a process through the organization rather than checking documents against a list of requirements. The difference in findings is significant.

Interviewing as an audit skill

Most auditor training focuses on standards knowledge and almost none on how to have a productive conversation with someone who is nervous about being audited. You will practice open-ended questioning techniques, how to follow up on vague answers, and how to distinguish between a misunderstanding and a genuine nonconformity. These are skills that require practice, so the course includes role-play exercises with written feedback.

Writing findings that lead somewhere

A nonconformity report that says procedure not followed gives the organization almost nothing to work with. You will learn to write findings that describe the evidence, reference the specific requirement, and frame the problem in a way that makes root cause analysis possible. There is a real difference between a finding that gets closed with a signature and one that leads to a process change.

The course is relevant for auditors working against ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or any other management system standard. The auditing method is the same regardless of which standard you are auditing against.

A good internal audit is uncomfortable for the right reasons. It finds things that need attention, not things that confirm everything is fine.
